When a free item promotion is active, it will automatically apply at checkout once you add the qualifying product to your cart. There is no need for a discount code.
Only one promotion can be applied per order, however. If you enter another discount code, the system will automatically choose the greater value offer, which may cause the free item to disappear from your cart.
